Biografia
Wczesne lata
Urodził się w Puerto Rico, a konkretnie w Cataño, 2 lipca 1928 r. W domu jego rodziców Alfonso Soto i Heleny Suárez. Wychował się w miejscu, w którym urodził się wraz z matką, gdzie uczył się w szkole podstawowej. Później ukończył szkołę średnią w szkole Bayamón.
Pedro Juan Soto od najmłodszych lat wykazywał zamiłowanie do nauk humanistycznych. W 1946 r. Przeniósł się do Nowego Jorku, gdzie zostało to potwierdzone, kiedy w wieku 18 lat zdecydował się zmienić studia na kierunku medycyna dla sztuki na Long Island University.

Po ukończeniu studiów wrócił do ojczyzny w 1955 roku, aby dołączyć do Community Education Division (DIVEDCO), jednostki Departamentu Nauczania Publicznego utworzonego w 1949 roku, zajmującej się rozwojem inicjatyw edukacyjnych w Puerto Rico poprzez sztuka.

Dodatkowo pomogła mu wychować jego dzieci: Roberto, Juan Manuel i Carlos. Ten ostatni, członek grupy działaczy niepodległościowych, zmarł w 1978 roku. Jego zabójstwo było częścią policyjnej zasadzki znanej jako sprawa Cerro Maravilla. Pomimo swojej pozycji w DIVEDCO i jako nauczyciel, nie przestawał poświęcać czasu na pisanie. Zapuścił się w wiele gatunków, takich jak opowiadanie, powieść i teatr. Wraz z żoną pisze pracę opublikowaną w 1990 roku.
Jego pierwsza praca w dziedzinie narracji powstała w Nowym Jorku, opowiadanie zatytułowane Los perros anónimos, które opublikował w magazynie Asonante, z którym kilkakrotnie później współpracował. Gatunkowi opowiadań poświęcił się do 1959 roku, kiedy to urodził pierwszą ze swoich powieści.
W latach 1953-1955 otrzymał nagrodę na Puerto Rican Athenaeum Contest. Pierwsze dwa za opowiadania Garabatos i Los Inocentes, ostatnie za sztukę The Guest. W 1960 roku ponownie zdobył tę nagrodę za powieść Płonąca ziemia, zimny sezon.
